Senior Research Engineer

Luna Innovations is seeking to fill a Senior Engineer position in their Advanced Materials Group in Blacksburg, VA. The Advanced Materials Group is focused on the development of new materials for composites and coatings. The senior engineer will be expected to make immediate contributions to current programs requiring the design and optimization of fiber reinforced polymer composite structures. The candidate should demonstrate the ability to develop composite product designs, and verify those designs through prototype fabrication and testing. Experience in fiber reinforced polymer composite fabrication and testing as well as modeling and finite element experience is desired. The candidate will need to be creative in identifying and advancing new material technologies and securing contracts to support R&D efforts. Excellent communications skills and the ability to work in a dynamic cross-disciplinary environment are also required. The candidate will also be required to manage complex programs, write research reports, prepare grant proposals, and to periodically present work in a team setting and to customers, clients, investors, government organizations, and collaborators. The preferred candidate will have a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering or related area or a Master’s degree with 2 years experience.
